History of artist-in-residence Krems

On the initiative of the Lower Austrian state government, the artist studios were set up on the top floor of a former carpet factory in Krems and officially handed over to serve their purpose in October 2000 by the then deputy governor Liese Prokop (see photo, right). This formed the basis for building an artist-in-residence program to promote art and cultural exchange.

As part of general restructuring, the artist-in-residence program was transferred from the control of the Lower Austrian state government to that of the Kunstmeile Krems Betriebs GmbH as “AIR Krems” in January of 2006. Since this time, AIR Krems has been run by the Kunstmeile Krems Betriebs GmbH.

Since April 2006, AIR Krems has been a member of
“res artis – worldwide network of artist residencies.”

By 2008, approximately 280 visiting artists from different disciplines had taken part in our AIR Krems program.
